Staprans is a Latvian American artist and playwright. He immigrated to the US in 1947. One of the artists he studied under was Hans Hofmann. He examines the architecture of everyday objects using color and flattened compositions. He created tension between representation and abstraction that played with the viewers’ expectations. His subject matter was an important component of his work where he explored the formal devices of Abstract Expressionism. He has work in many permanent collections around the world. “Boats at Newport” and “Landscape with a Barn” came to the gallery through Sotheby’s. “Housing Tract” was purchased at Neue Auctions in Ohio and “Boats ‘72” is from Hill Auction Gallery in Florida.
