Plein Air Painting with Pastels at Vereen Gardens

Spend a lovely day outside learning how to paint with pastels in plein air! In the morning, the class will start with a pastel painting demonstration. Carol will share how she creates brilliant color vibration in her pastel paintings. You will learn how to focus in on a strong composition, define your values, identify your light source, establish a point of focus, and how to see and use color effectively to capture atmosphere in your plein air paintings. You will learn the importance of painting light, shadows and colors from real life. There will be personalized teaching and individualized feedback throughout the day. 9:30-3:30 with a lunch break. All skill levels welcome. Oil painters are welcome with the understanding that the demonstration will be in Pastel. $130

The following is a list of items that I like to use. These are suggestions. You may use whatever materials that you have or prefer with the exception of a toned sanded paper (any color) which works best with my teaching techniques.

The items in bold are the most important supplies needed.

• Soft Pastels (I primarily use Sennelier Half sticks, Great American or Jack Richeson)

• Hard Pastels (I occasionally use a few Jack Richeson or Nupastel)

• Vine Charcoal or Graphite Pencil (I like a graphite stick)

• Small Sketchbook (I use 3.5” x 5” Strathmore Sketch)

• Pastel Premier One 12” x 16” size sheet, toned Pastel Premier sanded paper. It can be mounted or an individual sheet from an Assorted Colors Pack. (Various options available thru dakotapastels.com, Amazon, Dick Blick, or Jerry’s Artarama.)

• 2” Painters tape for catching your pastel dust!

• Gloves in a Bottle/Barrier Cream and/or Gloves (I use VIPER x-small gloves)

• Baby Wipes and/or Paper Towels (Viva are best!)

• Black Ultra Fine Tip Pen (for sketching)

• 3 Values of Gray Markers (I like the No.1, 3 and 5 Cool Gray)

• 1” White or Black Artists Tape or similar for mounting your paper

• Mounting Board (I like lightweight black plastic corrugated board or foamcore from Michaels)

• Portable Easel or Tripod with Box (I use a Sienna Tripod with a Heilman Box)

• Small Container with Corn Meal (to hold your working colors and to clean your pastels)

• Glassine Sheets (wax paper can also work to temporarily protect your work)
