Gallery brings back ‘Out of the Box’ show Nov. 2 – Dec. 30; reception Nov. 11, 1-4 p.m.

Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash will once again feature works by the Art Matters painting group in an eclectic exhibition titled Out of the Box from Wednesday, Nov. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 30. A reception, which is open to the public at no charge, will be held Saturday, Nov. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Last year’s Out of the Box show was so popular, the gallery decided to present a similarly innovative exhibition with brand new works for 2017. The Art Matters group began in 2006 as a pastel class, which was taught by noted North Myrtle Beach, SC artist Jane Staszak. The lively and talented group dubbed themselves the Pastel Sisters and had their first group show at Sunset River Marketplace in 2010. Since then the class has evolved into an open studio where they often explore media other than pastel. In 2012, in order to cover a broader range of style and work, they changed their name to Art Matters.

Participating in the show will be Jane Staszak, Nancy Guiry, Linda Young, Beryl Kirkpatrick, Susan Nern, Tina Lepsig, Sue Ruopp, Joanne Bendy, and Adrienne Johnston.

Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, “This group of artists loves to experiment, love to create, so this show includes a range of unexpected pieces from quilt work to felting to hand-painted tiles and more. They also have some one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments, which will be especially fun because the gallery Christmas tree will be up, too. Be sure to join us for the reception!”

Sunset River Marketplace will be kicking off the Holiday season with the Out of the Box reception, so there will be plenty of holiday treats, spirits, free gift certificate drawings, Holiday pottery, gifts and more.

November 9. Ann Ipock (Life is Short, Pack Your Bags NOW!)  Ann Ipock is an awarding-winning Southern humorist and speaker. Her sharp but gentle humor is a delight. The culminating book in the Life is Short series, this book explores the beautiful yet strange human race: elderly ladies hogging church pews, ridiculous Siri voice interpretations, and marital matches NOT made in heaven. Other subjects include holiday hysteria, kitchen misadventures including a large ham that needs its own seat belt and, of course, travel: bad vacation karma and tips on never packing light. Ipock’s zany humor is balanced by nostalgic tales of growing up in the sixties and affectionate family portraits, from her dancing 85-year old father to her lovable (but hairy) Grandog, Gus.

December 14. Dana Ridenour (Behind the Mask and Beyond the Cabin) Dana Ridenour is a retired FBI agent. She spent most of her career as an FBI undercover operative. Her first novel, Behind The Mask, is fiction but based on her personal experiences working as an agent. Beyond The Cabin, the second novel in her FBI undercover series, is set in the South Carolina low country. Both have earned her the Hal Bernard Best Novel Award presented by the Southeastern Writers Association.
