Gallery to feature ‘Trees: a Different Dimension.’ Reception Oct. 12

Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, NC will present photographic works by Louis Aliotta in an exhibition titled Trees: a Different Dimension. The show runs from Oct. 10 to Nov. 10 with a reception on Friday, Oct. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited and there is no charge.

The artist is looking at trees through his own unusual perspective for this exhibition of arboreal masterpieces. Several of the pieces are the result of digitized special effects while others are, in a more traditional fashion, pristine black and white. Still others have been deconstructed and physically manipulated with an added dimension.

According to Aliotta, he has been “playing with photography” since the age of 14. As the staff photographer for his school yearbook and student newspaper, he gained valuable experience with his candid and sports action shots, student portraits and group photos for the publications. During this time he also studied under master photographer John Freni. After high school he entered the Navy and was assigned Photographer’s Mate.

With his military service complete, he continued exploring photography and expanded his skills to include custom picture framing. He opened his own gallery and framing business in the Hudson River Valley of New York. In 2005, he relocated to North Carolina where he has created a new portfolio of images that include the Cape Fear region and the low country of South Carolina.

Honored often by his peers, Aliotta has been a three-time recipient of the South Carolina State Parks Artist In Residence Grant. He was selected by CresCom Bank to create, frame and install large black and white photographs of local scenes for both the Wilmington, NC and Little River, SC offices of the Charleston, SC-based bank. Aliotta also earned the First Place Award/Photography from Brunswick Artist Council in 2017 and 2016.

Also featured in the show are several wire sculpture trees by Dale Yarmuth. Born and raised in the midwestern automotive town of Saginaw, MI, Yarmouth has been an artist for over 45 years, primarily working in pen and ink, watercolor and acrylics. Most recently, after relocating to Myrtle Beach, SC, he has been re-developing his skills creating wire sculptures of trees.

Sunset River Marketplace showcases work by approximately 150 North and South Carolina artists, and houses some 10,000 square feet of oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, art glass, fabric art, pottery, sculpture, turned and carved wood and artisan-created jewelry.

There are two onsite kilns and four wheels used by students in the ongoing pottery classes offered by the gallery. There are realistic and abstract art classes as well as workshops by nationally and regionally known artists. During select months, the gallery hosts Coffee With the Authors, a series of presentations by local and regional authors. The gallery address is: 10283 Beach Drive SW, Calabash, NC 28467.
