Lecture Series Features WWII Author, Poet May 1
On Thursday, May 1, Sunset River Marketplace will feature two presenters in its ongoing Coffee With the Authors series. Robert T. Bradicich, author of “World War II As I Lived It,” will talk about his military service and Mike Dailey will read from “Somewhere Tonight a Soldier Stands,” his book of poetry honoring the military.
Bradicich entered the Army in 1943 and served with the 28th Inf. Div., 110th Regimental Combat Team. He landed at Omaha Beach on the coast of Normandy in German-occupied France on D-Day +21 (June 27, 1944) and entered combat near Saint Lô. He fought through the Hedgerows, went on to liberate Paris and continued fighting throughout France and into Germany. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service.
Born at an Air Force base in Puerto Rico, Mike Dailey’s father was an Air Force pilot, his mother an Army nurse. His father’s plane went missing just after his third birthday, with no trace ever found. For 30 years he was a civilian analyst for the U.S. Army, most of them in the Washington, D.C. area. He started writing poems for co-workers and went on to emcee office events at which he would share his poetic thoughts and ideas. Since retiring to North Carolina in 2009, Mike has published two poetry books. The first was a yearlong journal chronicling his diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer. The second tells stories of solders, the military, their equipment, their hardships and their sacrifices.
The Coffee With the Authors event runs from 10 to 11 a.m. It is free, but seating is limited, so reservations are required. Call 910.575.5999 to hold your place.
