‘Let’s Face It’ group show featured Oct. 5 – 31
Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC will feature a group show of face-themed works titled Let’s Face It, including works in acrylic, clay, charcoal, and photography. The show opens Wednesday, Oct. 5 and runs through Monday, Oct. 31.
Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, “We have a number of artists who are drawn to the intimacy of ‘the face,’ and I find the concept fascinating, so this is a collection I’ve been working on for a while. Some pieces, like Phil Duwel’s beautiful black and white photography and Karen Edgar’s elegant hand-rubbed charcoal, really delve into the subject’s personality and life situation. Others, such as Betsy Parker’s raku masks are more primitive. And Marty Allran’s sculptural clay pieces invoke a warm feminine presence that cannot be denied. Each artist has such a strong individual personality, I think our gallery visitors will really enjoy exploring this exhibit.”
Other participating artists are Victoria James, clay; Roseann Bellinger, acrylic; Celia Wester, acrylic; Kim Dawn Clayton, acrylic; Greta Swaim, acrylic; and Audrey McBride, clay.
Parker and James have both included clay moon faces in the show, adding another dimension to the collection. Parker said, “Our tendency to see faces where nature put none is visible in [my] big moon and stars. Faces for walls, faces emerging from vessels, faces built onto the clay, faces pushed from the back of the clay all speak to the power of the face in our imagery and the joy I find creating them in my work.”
