Marsha Tennant at Coffee With the Authors Nov. 8

Local children’s author Marsha Tennant is set to speak at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 10 – 11 a.m. as part of its Coffee With the Authors series.  Coffee, tea and breakfast treats will be served.

Tennant, who is well known for her Margaret, Pirate Queen books, will be speaking about her latest in the series, Margaret and the Diamond Key Mystery and the role of women as pirates. Anne Bonny and Mary Read are the infamous female pirates who inspired the book.

Tennant says, “Yes! Some of the greatest pirates ever known were women. The usually dressed like me and fought like men with pistol and cutlass. Generally, women were not allowed on ships because they were considered bad luck. However some of the most tyrannical and brave were females. Each had their own unique and intriguing stories. Join the Sea Queen adventure as we travel along with them!”

Tennant was a career educator, retired from the Horry County school system. She has contributed to Mary Jane’s Farm Organic magazine and Sasee. Her work was also included in The Gullah Grass Doll Creation, a collection of essays on low country culture.

Coffee With the Authors is free, however seating is limited so reservations are required. Call the gallery at 910.575.5999 to hold your spot.
