Susan Dade: Inspired at Gallery June 2 – 28, 2014
Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, N.C. will present Susan Dade: Inspired from Monday, June 2 through Saturday, June 28. The show will feature acrylic and watercolor paintings by Southport, N.C. artist Susan Dade. There will be an artist’s reception at the gallery on Thursday, June 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Thursday, June 19 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the artist will give a painting demonstration at the gallery. Both events are open to the public at no charge.
A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, Dade began her career as a high fashion illustrator for Women’s Wear Daily, the “bible” of the fashion industry. After several years there, she moved to Glamour magazine as an advertising illustrator. Her pen and ink and charcoal drawings were seen in New Yorker magazine and The New York Times. She went on to teach art at the Fashion Institute of Technology before finally retiring to Brunswick County, N.C.
Since moving to Southport, N.C. in 1994, Dade has become well known for her distinctive harbor scenes, local landmarks and bright color palette. She said, “Since moving here I’ve been able to concentrate solely on painting. From the start, I was inspired by the coastal area and longed to paint the boats and marsh scenes. Now that I’ve painted so many landscapes I’m starting to loosen my approach and find new subjects.”
She has earned many honors and awards from her peers, including the Watercolor 2014 donors Award in honor of Janet Sessoms at Wilmington Art Association’s Spring Show during the Azalea Festival. In 2013, she received an Honorable Mention at the Associated Artists of Southport Regional Summer Show. Also in 2013, her painting Red, Right Return was juried into the 14th Annual Maritime Exhibit at the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, Wash.
Ginny Lassiter, owner of Sunset River Marketplace, said, “Susan’s work has always been immensely popular with our customers. People really respond to her use of bright color, I think. In this show we’ll include some of her linear style pieces along with her new more loosely painted pieces. She has a wonderful way of capturing the spirit of the Coast.”
Since opening in 2002, Sunset River Marketplace has become an active supporter of performing, literary and visual arts in the area. The 10,000 square-foot gallery features work by over 200 North and South Carolina artists. Its on-site pottery studio has two kilns and three wheels for use by students. Ongoing oil, pastel and watercolor classes are also provided, in addition to workshops by nationally known artists. A recently added Paint & Party series provides a fun after-work experience for those with no previous art background. The gallery’s framing department offers full-service, on-site custom frame design.
