The Senator’s Son

The book tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of a young boy, which occurred in Currituck County, NC in February 1905.

The victim was eight-year-old Kenneth Beasley, the son of Samuel M. Beasley, a prosperous farmer and local businessman who represented the county in the North Carolina State Senate at the time. Senator Beasley lived with his wife and children in Poplar Branch, NC, a small fishing village on the coast. Kenneth was a third-grade student at the local two-room country schoolhouse, which was situated at the edge of a wide expanse of deep, swampy woods.

Within days of Kenneth’s disappearance, rumors began circulating that he had been kidnapped. In particular, suspicion was directed at Joshua Harrison, another local farmer who had a political grudge against Senator Beasley. A small-town jury trial turned into a nationally publicized media circus. These events took place against the backdrop of the very turbulent politics of North Carolina at the time.
